Cholecalciferol, which is formed by dehydrogenation of cholesterol, can be formed by ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, the vitamin D of Cholecalciferol is 7-dehydrocholesterol. Cholecalciferol (CAS No.: 67-97-0) is formed into 25-hydroxycholecalciferol through the action of the hydroxylase system in the liver, and then is hydroxylated into 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol in the kidney. This compound is 50% more active than cholecalciferol, and has been proved to be the real active form of vitamin D in the body. And 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol is a hormone secreted by the kidneys, so in fact cholecalciferol (CAS No.: 67-97-0) is also a prohormone.
